A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such treatments must be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
