Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical body horror, but beneath Together resides a profound contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that arise in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
