The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
