Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any major honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
