EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
