2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Developer to Boost Troubled Action Game Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Follows Lukewarm Reception

Brinkman assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster early showing last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had revealed the requirement for a distinct game identity.

Ismailer noted that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a revised vision, aiming to better meet player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

The news follows a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.

Below is the complete text from the president's memo:

Dear Team—

I know you all just finished your meeting - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a update, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to persist.”

Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last fall’s the game demo was revealing. It validated the appeal of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It highlighted the necessity for a more distinct vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the input to consideration and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to fulfill its ambition to our audience.

The belief in this project increases every day. To boost the remarkable development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of the team. After a period of talks, Ben starts with us on the specified date.

His guidance and background in the PVP shooter space is vast, having devoted the past decade and a half creating and overseeing some of the most popular titles in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Let’s together in greeting him next week. We are all looking forward to continue observing the development of the game in the time to follow.

David

Game Details and Vision

The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 alongside a community playtest. Initially, 31st Union described the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the genre."
